CDS - Combined Defence Services Exam

The Combined Defense Services (CDS) exam is a highly prestigious and competitive examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in India. It is held twice a year to select candidates for admission into the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), Air Force Academy (AFA), and Officers' Training Academy (OTA). Introduction to the Combined Defense Services (CDS) Exam

The CDS exam is designed to assess a candidate's aptitude, knowledge, and suitability for the Indian Armed Forces. It is open to both men and women, with separate entry schemes for each academy. The IMA, INA, and AFA admit male candidates, while the OTA accepts both male and female candidates. The CDS exam is considered one of the most challenging competitive exams in India, demanding a high level of academic proficiency, physical fitness, and leadership qualities.

The CDS Exam will be held twice a year in April (CDS 1) and September (CDS 2).

CDS 2023 Latest Update

  • UPSC CDS (I) 2023 Application Form was released on 21st December 2022, and the last date to apply for the exam is 10th January 2023.
  • The official notification for the CDS (I) 2023 exam will be released on 21st December 2022. The exam will be conducted on 16th April 2023.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the CDS exam, candidates must meet certain criteria related to age, nationality, educational qualifications, and physical standards. Here are the key eligibility requirements:

  1. Nationality:
    • Indian citizens
    • Subject of Nepal or Bhutan
    • Tibetan refugees (settled in India since January 1962)
    • Indian origin individuals who have migrated from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Burma, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, and Ethiopia or Vietnam, intending to permanently settle in India.
  2. Age Limits:
    • For Indian Military Academy (IMA): Unmarried male candidates between 19 and 24 years.
    • For Indian Naval Academy (INA): Unmarried male candidates between 19 and 22 years.
    • For Air Force Academy (AFA): Unmarried male candidates between 19 and 23 years.
    • For Officers' Training Academy (OTA): Male candidates (married or unmarried) between 19 and 25 years and female candidates between 19 and 25 years.
  3. Educational Qualifications:
    • For IMA and OTA: Bachelor's degree from a recognized university or equivalent.
    • For INA: Bachelor's degree in engineering from a recognized university/institution.
    • For AFA: Bachelor's degree in engineering or a degree from a recognized university with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level or Bachelor of Science with Physics and Mathematics.
  4. Physical Standards:
    • Candidates must meet specific physical requirements in terms of height, weight, and visual acuity, as specified by the respective academies.

Exam Pattern

The CDS exam consists of a written examination followed by an interview and personality test conducted by the Services Selection Board (SSB). The written examination comprises multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and is conducted in an offline mode. The exam pattern varies for different academies, as outlined below:

  1. Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), and Air Force Academy (AFA):
    • Written Examination:
      • English (Objective Type): 2 hours duration, 100 marks
      • General Knowledge (Objective Type): 2 hours duration, 100 marks
      • Elementary Mathematics (Objective Type): 2 hours duration, 100 marks
    • Total Marks: 300
  2. Officers' Training Academy (OTA):
    • Written Examination:
      • English (Objective Type): 2 hours duration, 100 marks
      • General Knowledge (Objective Type): 2 hours duration, 100 marks
    • Total Marks: 200

Note: There is a penalty for wrong answers marked in the objective type question papers. For each incorrect response, one-third (1/3) of the marks assigned to that question are deducted.

Selection Process

The selection process for the CDS exam consists of two stages:

  1. Written Examination:
    • Candidates who meet the eligibility criteria undergo a written examination as per the prescribed exam pattern.
    • Based on the performance in the written exam, candidates are shortlisted for the next stage.
  2. SSB Interview and Personality Test:
    • Shortlisted candidates are called for the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview and personality test.
