The National Defence Academy (NDA) is located in Khadakwasla, near Pune, Maharashtra. It is the first tri-service academy in the world, where candidates are trained for the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force simultaneously. • The NDA exam application process started on 21st December 2022.
• The last date to apply is 10th January 2023.
• UPSC released the official notification on 21st December 2022 and invited online applications for the National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Examination (I) 2023 on its official website.
• The commission will conduct the examination on 16th April 2023 for admission to the Army, Navy, and Air Force wings of the NDA for the 150th Course and for the 112th Indian Naval Academy Course (INAC) commencing from 2nd January 2024.
• A total of 395 vacancies are to be filled through this recruitment exam. Of the total, 370 seats will be filled in National Defence Academy (NDA) and the rest 25 in the Naval academy.

UPSC NDA & NA 2023 Overview

Eligibility Criteria

Before applying for the NDA exam, candidates need to fulfill certain eligibility criteria related to age, nationality, and educational qualifications. Here are the details:

Nationality: Candidates must be Indian citizens or subjects of Bhutan or Nepal. Tibetan refugees who came to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India, are also eligible.

Age Limit: Candidates must be unmarried male candidates between 16.5 and 19.5 years of age. They must be born between July 2, 2004, and January 1, 2008.

Educational Qualifications:

• For Army Wing: Candidates must have passed the 10+2 examination conducted by a State Education Board or a University.
• For Air Force and Naval Wings: Candidates must have passed the 10+2 examination with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, conducted by a State Education Board or a University.

NDA 2023 Exam Pattern

The exam will be conducted in pen and paper mode. The exam-takers are advised to use a black ballpoint pen to mark answers. There will be negative marking for the wrong answers. The medium of the exam is bilingual – English and Hindi.

Application Process

The application process for the NDA exam is conducted online. Candidates need to visit the official UPSC website and fill out the application form. The form includes personal details, educational qualifications, and preferences for the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Candidates are required to upload scanned copies of their photograph and signature. After completing the form, candidates need to pay the application fee online.

Exam Pattern

The NDA exam consists of two stages: a written examination and an interview by the Services Selection Board (SSB). Let's explore each stage in detail:

Written Examination:

• Duration: The written examination is conducted for a total duration of 5 hours.
• Medium: The question paper is set in both English and Hindi.
• Subjects: The written exam consists of two papers:
  • Mathematics: This paper tests the candidates' mathematical skills and includes topics such as algebra, trigonometry, geometry, calculus, statistics, etc.
  • General Ability Test (GAT): This paper assesses candidates' knowledge in English, General Knowledge, Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History, Geography, and Current Affairs.
• Marking Scheme: The written examination is conducted for a total of 900 marks, with Mathematics carrying 300 marks and the GAT carrying 600 marks.
• Negative Marking: There is a penalty for incorrect answers, with 1/3rd of the marks allotted to the question deducted for each wrong answer.

SSB Interview

• Qualifying the written examination is a prerequisite for the SSB interview.
• The SSB interview is a comprehensive selection process that assesses candidates' suitability for a career in the armed forces.
• The interview process includes stages such as the Intelligence Test, Psychological Test, Group Testing Officer Tasks, and Personal Interview.
• The SSB interview carries a maximum of 900 marks.

Mathematics:

• Algebra: Quadratic equations, linear equations, matrices and determinants.

• Integral Calculus: Integration by parts, integration by substitution, definite and indefinite integrals.
